WINTER SKINCARE
As the seasons change, it’s time for us to turn our attention to something many of us struggle with - dry skin in winter.
In fact, we surveyed 2,000 people to explore the UK’s winter skincare routine and discovered that half of Brits say their skin type completely changes between the seasons. A further 46% of people change some aspect of their skincare routine in winter to adjust to colder conditions, with one in 10 saying they change it completely.
But if you’re not sure where to start, why not take a look at our winter skin care tips so you’re more wow than whoa this winter.
MEET OUR WINTER HEROES
FOR DRY SKIN IN WINTER
Set aside summer skin moisturisers and opt for something a little richer in texture to deliver a long-lasting moisture boost giving dry, winter skin its hydration fix.
The colder, drier air can also cause flare ups of eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. We found that one in five Brits suffer from these skin conditions more acutely during winter.
Applying a thicker-formulation moisturiser immediately after cleansing your face or washing your body, whilst your skin is still wet, can help reduce the effects of these skin conditions by locking in moisture.
FOR YOUR BODY’S DEHYDRATED SKIN
Winter winds and central heating are shockers for sapping moisture from your skin. Help keep pins and luscious limbs smooth, hydrated and soft with a grand slather of body butter.
FOR DRY LIPS
Harsh weather can be a right pain in the kisser. Say no to dry lips and keep your pout on the right side of perfection by applying a lip balm or butter a few times a day.
FOR DRY HANDS IN WINTER
Constant movement, over-washing, cold air, stuffy rooms, daily graft… we hear ya. Learn how to care for your hands and treat your hard-working hands with a conditioning hand cream to help thwart the drying effects of life.
FOR THIRSTY UNDER-EYES
The skin around your eyes is thinner than the rest of the face, making it vulnerable to the whipping winds of winter. Incorporate an eye cream to your winter skincare routine in the morning and evening to give your eye area an extra bit of TLC.
FOR DULL HAIR
There’s no freestyling for dehydrated, winter hair – it’s all about helping keep control for healthy-looking locks. Try dropping the heat, add some moisture into the mix, and pop on a hair mask once a week. Voilà.
“Dry skin? Hello Winter! As the months get colder, it's important to season-proof your routine. No matter your skin type, switching up products can help protect and moisturise your skin against those external aggressors''

MOISTURISE
Apply a rich-textured moisturiser after cleansing to boost dry skin’s hydration. Our Vitamin E Moisture Cream has hyaluronic acid in it so remember to apply this while your skin is still damp to help lock in every drop.
Skin especially dry? Why not try adding a face mist before your moisturiser too - this will help to pump up the moisture and help to maintain skin’s natural moisture barrier.
A key part of sealing your seasonal skincare is helping protect yourself from harmful UV rays with SPF. Just because you can’t see the sun, doesn’t mean it isn’t still there! A huge 73% of Brits admitted they don’t wear SPF during winter, with 17% saying they only wear SPF when it’s sunny. Even more concerningly, 5% of UK skincare users never apply SPF.
Finally, we spoke with Consultant Dermatologist and British Skin Foundation Trustee, Dr Bav Shergill, who has provided eight top tips for keeping skin in good shape this winter.
- Make sure you’re moisturising regularly and using an emollient that’s right for you – keeping skin moist is imperative to avoid it getting cracked and infected.
- Be careful with the kinds of clothes you wear. Some materials, for example, lamb’s wool may irritate skin and cause flare-ups.
- One of the best and simplest ways to combat the winter effects on skin is to regularly apply moisturisers and lip salves. This will help replenish the lost moisture from the skin. All skin types benefit from a moisturiser.
- Avoid harsh, alcohol-based cleansers and soaps. Stay away from cleaning products that contain alcohol and go easy on the exfoliation.
- Protect skin with warm clothing (a scarf, hat and gloves) whilst outside. If the rain makes your clothes damp, ensure that you change into something dry as soon as possible and don’t leave wet clothes in contact with your skin which may cause further irritation or chaffing.
- Whilst it’s natural to want to stay warm indoors, even the central heating can affect our skin. The drier air in centrally heated buildings means the skin can dry out, so try not to turn the thermostat up to maximum.
- Avoid the temptation to have a long hot bath, as this can strip away much needed natural oil from the skin. Try and shorten the length of time and remember to keep the water temperature warm not hot.
- Apply a moisturiser to skin straight after a bath or shower while the skin is still slightly damp. Drying your skin vigorously with a towel can damage it, so pat dry and don’t rub.
